Kopi Tubruk

Kopi Tubruk

Java, Indonesia — traditional

Java's unfiltered coffee tradition: fine grounds and sugar poured directly into a cup with boiling water, stirred once, then left alone. The grounds settle to the bottom over a few minutes, and you drink the clear liquid off the top. The last sip is mud — leave it. Tubruk means 'collision' in Javanese, because the coffee and water are simply thrown together. No filter, no ceremony, just coffee.
